John Chilembwe is a national hero and martyr in Malawi for leading one of the earliest uprisings against British colonial rule. His rebellion, though unsuccessful, was a significant precursor to Malawi's independence movement. His efforts to uplift and educate his people, combined with his opposition to colonial exploitation and conscription during World War I, have cemented his legacy as a symbol of resistance and national pride. Malawi honors him with John Chilembwe Day and features his likeness on currency and monuments [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
